SEO with Google, Yahoo and MSN
Surveys constantly show that Google is by far the biggest player of the search engines market (70%-80% use Google). Yahoo is in second place (%10-%20) and far behind is MSN (~5%). (See http://marketshare.hitslink.com/search-engine-market-share.aspx?qprid=5)
Beside Google, Yahoo and MSN, There are a lot of small players such as AOL and Ask, however, It’s probably not worth spending time (and money) on them. In most cases, Due to Google Domination in the search marketing area, it would be better to focus on Google first. Ultimately, the differences in getting rank between Yahoo!, MSN and Google are fairly minor.
Saying that, in some world markets Google compete with other players and the gap is not great. For example in China Goole closely compete with Baidu. Google has made a real effort to deliver localised search results in almost every country around the globe.
In any case, the common purpose of all search engines is to bring in more ad revenue by building a loyal audience of users who prefer to use their engines & toolbars. They can only do that if they deliver quality results. In fact they work together to fight Spam & law quality websites who don’t deliver any value. You can use Google Webmaster area (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/) to get the most recent news on what is allowed and what is considered to be SPAM.
Your SEO strategy needs to be based on things that work across all of the major search engines. In particular, to make sure you don’t go against their guidelines and more importantly that you deliver a quality site.
